VANESSA RUSSELL- CHARACTER AS A BRAND

Brand Analyse

More information about the Brand and the flavours.

As Nelson is my home town below is some of the images and stereotypes that go with Upper Moutere and the people. People from Upper Moutere are seen as big farming and rural families and along with that comes many jokes and stereotypes surrounding rural hippies and hillbillies.

Apart of Old Mout's brand they often use a black kiwi to show its New Zealand roots and homegrown feel. Below are images that show different ways or turning the kiwi into cartoons.

For my character I have decided to further use the kiwi but put a Upper Moutere spin on it to show the brands Country/rural roots and ways of life.
Below are some simple sketches of form and pose of my initial kiwi design.

Because the design of the Kiwi is so common into New Zealand the clothing that I will add to it will make it distinctive and therefore recognisable as Old Mout Cider's mascot.

I went with a typical rural look for my mascot as it conveys the brands theme and values,
For further development I  may add the OLD MOUT logo to the singlet to make it even more identifiable.

Precedent Example 4

Precedent Example 4

Vodafone Building by Barbosa & GuimarĂ£es in Oporto, Portugal

This building plays with the idea of having different angles in a area and light. In my space I think it could be good to show a chaotic mind through many different wall angles and geometric shaped lighting or skylights.

Precedent Example 3

David Letellier - Kinetic sculpture installation, 2010

This sculpture shows that a installation doesn't have to be on the ground to be effective. I thought that it would show the idea of not being able to sleep if i suspended the bed in the air or a contraption that communicated restlessness above the bed.

The Italian Pavilion EXPO2010 | Design: Giampaolo Imbrighi, Teresa Crescenzi, Antonello De Bonis, Cosimo Dominelli, Iodicearchitetti (Francesco Iodice, Giuseppe Iodice, Marcello Silvestre)

This design effectively communicates the idea of combining different materials in a space. The geometric design and cut of the wood gives it a clean, polished finish that I am trying to achieve with my design. I find the idea of playing with different materials to be something that can show a restless mind as it is not confined to one "idea" so in this design the space isn't confined to one material.

Precedent Example 1

Foam by Kohei Nawa at the Aichi Triennial.

I chose this example as it conveys the idea of calm with its texture and colours. The simple structure of the foam makes it appear to look like clouds therefore having connotations that relate to sleep such as peacefulness. I would like to use elements of this in my room to show the idea of relaxation and comfort instead of having a conventional bed in my design.

Brief

                            Brief

Design a space that recreates or captures the essence of the clients homely ritual. The concept must communicate the alliance between comfort and discomfort in the given space as well as retaining some elements of a functional bedroom.

Aesthetic Gesture to Clients Ritual

In response to my client's ritual I wanted to play with idea of something being quiet and comfortable but then having a sense of restlessness and discomfort to contrast this. To show this I used an egg carton to show the quietness as that material is often used to combat a lot of sound in an area. I then made a mock up bed with pins in it to represent being in a peaceful place but with the added agitation of this being disrupted.

Client Interview

Through interviewing my client I found out that her ritual was that she woke up at 3:30 am every morning for no apparent reason and has trouble then getting back to sleep. Above is the notes that i took during this interview.

Ritual 2 Final Product

Ritual 2 Final
I chose a black background as i usually perform this ritual at night. The pattern down the left is a rubbing i took from the shower hose. The three different sections on the right represent the songs that played and for how long, the colours were chosen as i sat down and painted whilst listening to these songs to convey the feeling when listened to. The last song was ripped at the end to show that the song hadn't ended before my ritual was completed so it isn't finalised like the other two. The different textures and smells are from the variety of products used like scrubs and body wash and i had to improvise with the towel texture and use rope to communicate the process of drying myself.

Ritual 2 Method

I then had the idea of having a timeline to communicate the time and the processes during my shower. The wider the bar on the timeline the more time that was spent doing it, for my documentation i will also acknowledge the duration of what song is playing in conjunction with the things that i did.

I then looked at showing the different materials and products i used when in the shower to further document the ritual. I took showers with pieces of paper and used the products on them as well as using water colours to record how the water fell.

Ritual 2 feedback and processes

Response and ideas to second document of ritual

In depth analyse of my process and the ideas behind it

I then recorded the process of my ritual and the things i do during it and also the co-ordination of these activities with the songs playing and the time that had past.

Independent Study - 1st Ritual Drawing

For our independent study we had to document our ritual and show it through any medium we wanted. My ritual is making a playlist every time i have a shower so for my medium i used a mix of water colours and pens. I chose to do watercolours as it would convey the element of water in my ritual. The pocket watch symbolises the way that the playlist enables me to keep track of time. The writing is the songs on my current playlist, while the drawings and swirls show the music and the happy connotations that i associate with it.
